Stay by him or keep him safe?

I witnessed some guy getting beat up by jocks. It was after school on the football field. I was running on the track. When they left, I ran to him. He was shaking badly, but wasn't crying. I called 911. I saw blood, coming out of his month and possibly other places. It scared me so much. I was worried. The ambulance came and put a neck brace on him. I left the track and drove up to the hospital to check up on him. They wouldn't let me in, because he was unconscious. I try to vist everyday. When I am there he just looks at me with big eyes, like he is afraid of me. After a few mins I asked him what was wring. He replied that I was the reason he got into a fight. I asked why? He told me that ever since we had a few I am thinking five classes together, he wanted to ask me on a date, but the jocks that were beating him up. Told him to stay away from Davids girl. I left after a few mins of silence, I haven't gone back since. What else can I do? I would love to get to know him, but I am afraid David will harm him again.
